In 2023, nearly three in ten adults in Canada reported experiencing a mental health issue. In fact, this proportion has been rising for several years. In Quebec, emergency room visits related to suicide attempts also increased from 45 to 59 per 100,000 people between 2020 and 2024.
Despite this, some people are reluctant to seek help. It is in this context that the digital platform MyTools.ca was created. This platform helps users better understand their mental health challenges and recognize the signs of distress earlier.
A large-scale initiative in Quebec
Developed by the Association québécoise de prévention du suicide (AQPS), My Tools is a platform that complements Suicide.ca. The platform offers mental health self-management tools to improve well-being and prevent suicidal thoughts.
MyTools.ca is primarily intended for people aged 14 and older who:
- are experiencing psychological distress;
- live with anxiety or depression;
- want to better understand their emotions;
- want to take care of their daily well-being.
Each user chooses tools that meet their needs. Family members and friends are also encouraged to use the resources provided. Professionals and care providers can also recommend tools to the people who use their services.
Simple tools for self-care
The platform brings together several tools to help you understand your emotions and support your well-being. Here are a few of them:
My journal: This feature lets you record your moods and emotions. You can reflect on the positive or negative moments that stood out during your day. You can also add photos of important moments. This journal helps you recognize your thoughts and their effects.
My small steps offers simple, personalized challenges. Users choose realistic actions at their own pace. They can then track their progress each day. This tool encourages small steps forward. It promotes self-reliance and strengthens a sense of accomplishment.
The Breathing exercise offers a five-minute guided meditation. It can bring your attention back to the present moment and calm your emotions.
Quotes covers five themes: hope, resilience, well-being, perseverance, and self-esteem. The quotes remind users that difficult emotions don’t last forever. They also encourage a kind and compassionate attitude toward oneself.
My safety plan offers six personalized steps. It provides useful strategies for difficult times. This plan can be completed on your own or with someone you trust. It can then be shared, printed, and updated.
The Virtual assistant suggests strategies based on your needs without using generative artificial intelligence. The tool is not intended to replace in-person professional intervention or serve as a crisis intervention service. Instead, depending on your needs, you’ll be directed to the appropriate professional resources.
These are just a few examples of tools available—tools that remind us that taking care of our mental health can start with very small and simple steps.
